Other members of
Fake That had already appeared as Elvis and George
Michael, the idea of doing something up to date and
upbeat was discussed and Take That were picked as
prime candidates for ‘taking off' as it were and
so finally, Fake That were here and nearly ready for
action.
So to cut a long
story short John Wooldridge a local property
developer and owner of the club on the Isle of Wight
invited a local freelance journalist to write an
article on the entertainment we were providing.
After making
something out of nothing he came up with the
inflated story that instead of booking Take That Mr
Wooldridge had inadvertently booked ‘Fake That’.
The national papers caught wind of Mr Wooldridges
misfortune and so the story started to snowball.
Not before long we
had acquired an agent and were appearing in
nightclubs up and down the country.
The Fake That story
comes to an end in July 1995 when a local lady who
had previously worked for the press and had been or
was a friend of a certain entrepreneur by the name
of Mr Richard Branson approached us after appearing
at a local fete. (Yeah believe it or not we were
celebrities with a fan base at one point on the
IOW!)
The lady informed
us that she had written to Mr Branson explaining
what we had achieved and told him that possibly with
some backing we might have the potential to go all
the way.
Mr Branson had
kindly returned her letter with interest stating
that if we supplied him with a video he would take a
look at it and if he liked it he would get in touch.
Well sadly two of
the members were not fully committed and Fake That
had no choice but to finish "Faking".
They say everybody
has 15 minutes of fame, well I think I can say we
all had that …………. and some! |
